Puffer Party: the Krillion pufferfish game
Puffer Party is Krillion's multiplayer mode, a hot-potato category game. The room gets a category, and whoever holds the pufferfish has to name an answer before it pops, then pass it on. The last player with hearts left wins. You play it on the game's own site, at krillion.io/party; this page explains the rules.
How a round works
- The room gets a category, worded like the daily prompts: "Name a…".
- The player holding the puffer names one answer. If it counts, and nobody has used it for this category yet, the puffer passes to the next player.
- The fuse is hidden and random, between 10 and 30 seconds. Whoever holds the puffer when it pops loses a heart, and the room moves on to a new category.
- Lose your last heart and you are out. The last player still floating wins.
The game sums it up in three lines: answer the question before the puffer explodes on you; rarer answers get you closer to an extra heart; no reusing answers for the current question.
Hearts and rare answers
Everyone starts with two hearts by default. Each accepted answer fills a meter by its tier points, the same tiers and points as the daily dive. Fill the meter (600 points by default) and you gain a heart, up to the room's cap of five. So an obvious answer keeps you alive, and a rare one also buys you a spare life.
With the default 600-point meter. A room's host can change it.
Rated or quick play
- Rated matches you with players near your rating, and the rating moves with your results. This is Krillion's ranked mode.
- Quick play is unrated, just for fun.
- Matchmaking tables come in four sizes: 1v1, three players, four to six, and eight to ten.
- Your rating is saved in the browser you play on. Sign in with Google to keep it on other devices.
Playing with friends
Set up a room and share its link or four-letter code. A room takes 2 to 16 players and needs at least two to start. The host sets the starting hearts, the heart cap (up to ten), and how many points a heart costs.
Tips
- Any accepted answer beats a pop. With a hidden fuse, a quick obvious answer is safer than a slow rare one.
- Keep a second answer ready. Nobody can reuse an answer in the same category, so the obvious ones go first.
- Practise on the daily sheets. Categories read like the daily prompts, and some match the free Lexicon pack word for word, such as "Name an English word starting with “spr”". Each archived day lists every accepted answer by tier, so you can see which picks are rare.
Questions
- Does Krillion have a ranked mode?
- Yes, in Puffer Party. Rated games match you with players near your rating, and the rating goes up or down with your results. Quick play is unrated.
- How many players can play Puffer Party?
- Two to sixteen in a room you set up yourself, and a game needs at least two to start. Matchmaking tables are 1v1, three players, four to six, or eight to ten.
- How long until the puffer pops?
- Each fuse is random, between 10 and 30 seconds, and you cannot see it. Answer early rather than waiting for the perfect pick.
- How do you get an extra heart?
- Accepted answers fill a meter by their tier points, the same points as the daily dive. Fill it (600 points by default) and you gain a heart, up to the room's cap. Rarer answers fill it faster.
